ALTENBURG ISLAND ZOO

A great destination for the whole family
Here in the Altenburg Island Zoo, visitors can see a wide range of native and exotic animals. Idyllically set on an artificial island in the middle of the Large Pond, the family- and child-friendly zoo is a small oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
From the meerkat enclosure to the Island Zoo Festival
The Island Zoo, opened in 1954, is home to 87 species of fauna with a total of 460 animals. Native animals in particular, such as goats, eagle owls, donkeys and guinea pigs, have their habitat here. But the cute meerkats, monkeys, lizards and exotic fish also feel at home here. In the summer months, pedalos and rowboats provide plenty of fun on the water, while there is also a children's playground on land. In addition, the Island Zoo Festival, held every summer, attracts young and old alike.
A fantastic, affordable destination for children and families
In any case, the zoo is a wonderful place for children and families: a petting enclosure, an outdoor enclosure for meerkats, moderate entrance fees – children under 6 years of age are admitted free – and many other offers suitable for children turn a trip to the Island Zoo into a great, family-friendly occasion. On the "Weg der Sinne" (Trail of Senses), the children can become playfully acquainted with the diversity of nature.
Despite its idyllic setting, the Island Zoo is easy to reach. Parking spaces are available along August-Bebel Straße and at the Südbad (bathing area).
Dogs kept on a lead allowed
By the way: dog owners do not have to worry – they can bring their dogs with them into the zoo. Dogs kept on a lead are allowed in the zoo.
